Founded in 1818 as the result of the marriage of two families, this is one of the few genuinely family owned and run Champagne Houses remaining. Pelorus is the chardonnay-predominant sparkling wine label of Cloudy Bay. Sunny skies and the long cool summer days ensure the slow ripening so essential for achieving the elegance, apple-crispness and yeasty complexity. 'Pelorus Jack' was a famous dolphin who, for more than 20 years around the turn of last century, met the steamers crossing between the two main islands of New Zealand and escorted them through the Marlborough Sounds.

Built in early XVIII Century, Château de Chamirey is an elegant château, influenced by the Italian architecture and with exquisite formal gardens. Built on a rocky headland, it has a unique position overlooking the vineyards which are in the best terroirs of Mercurey. The domain consists of 37 hectares, 15 of which are Premier Cru, reflecting the diverse soils and micro climates found within the appellation.
The vines are cared for with the most rigourous attention to detail which includes hand harvesting and sorting the grapes prior to ageing mostly in oak barrels for around 18 months. The wines are only bottled when they are at their optimum stage of maturity, being totally “on their fruit” and demonstrating the very best primary aromas. Pure genius.

There is a regional tendency towards harvesting grapes later and therefore producing a markedly sweeter style of wine that generally does no favours to food. This property has chosen to buck the trend and opt for to a cleaner, racy character that offers a delicate assault on the tastebuds.

From the region that has more Michelin starred restaurants per person than any other corner of the world. Organic and biodynamic viticulture is very popular in Alsace and René Muré uses elements of both in his winemaking. This is a very classy “Gewurtz” made in the classic slightly drier style with gentle spicy notes and subtle underlying fruit.

The location of this vineyard is ideally situated on the south side of the hill and has been famed for years for its outstanding Rieslings. Great intensity of flavour, with a great balance and length.

A dry style of Vouvray made from Chenin grapes grown on clay-flint soils and aged in old casks. Didier and Catherine Champelou are both descended from vignerons, and both graduated from the agricultural college at Montreuil-Bellay. They obviously had a clear vision of what they wanted to achieve, and went on to establish their domaine in Vouvray in 1984.

Situated high on the plateau above the village of Chavanay, this domaine is now run by Antoine’s son Stephane who has transformed the standard of wine-making to its current level of excellence. His Condrieu is produced from just 1.5 hectares of viognier grapes and is quite exceptional. Allow this luscious, silky beauty to breath in the glass to enjoy the full benefit of the complex aromas and flavours as they develop – it is well worth the wait!

The tiny appellation of Picpoul forms part of the sprawling Coteaux du Languedoc appellation. Chateau de la Mirande itself is run by Joseph Albajan who makes a typically thirst-quenching Picpoul de Pinet from the ancient “Piquepoul” grape. This crisp, dry white wine is a perfect foil to virtually any fish or seafood dish.

Bin No 42: Dry Riesling, Villa Wolf 2008
The J L Wolf estate in Wachenheim is a model farm designed by the architect Eisenlohr. It was completed in 1843 and boasts a unique country villa, a courtyard with mature trees, a formal garden and magnificent vaulted cellars. The winery was founded in 1756 by the then mayor, Johann Wolf, who bought some of the best vineyard parcels above the villages of Wachenheim, Forst and Deidesheim. A lovely dry style Riesling ideal with lightly spiced dishes.

From vineyards nestling in the foothills of the Dolomite Mountains, this wine is soft yet crisp and certainly more vinous than most. There are hints of orchard fruits and a touch of almond on the nose, with a typically lively texture on the palate. A perfect wine for sipping on the terrace as an aperitif or to accompany fish.

The very oldest document which states the origin of the name "Gavi" is preserved at the Record Office in Genova and mentions vineyards and chestnut woods on a spot called Meirana. The wine "La Meirana" shows the extraordinary characteristics typical of the area of Gavi: unique almonde hints pale yellow with green highlights, the perfume is fine and delicate, with some hints of anise and flowers. Dry taste, elegant, with a great finish.

This is serious Soave! 100% garganega, made from 30 year old vines. Stefano Inama’s wines are characterised by late-picking and extended maceration on the skins, thereby achieving much greater colour, density and ripeness than would normally be associated with this region. An attractive nose of elderflower and camomile is followed by a fruity mouthful with hints of sweet almond on the finish.

Albariño is the white grape variety of note from Spain with a style very similar to Viognier. From the Rias Baixas region, this is the Iberian answer to Chablis and a great choice if you prefer something a little different to Chardonnay.

What an interesting combination: the most-planted classic Italian grape variety grown in the Murray River Valley on land that was once a large sheep station in New South Wales. The salmon pink colour is both pretty and intense, while the flavours are of bright summer berries and ripe plums.

In Nuits-St-Georges, Alain Michelot is undisputedly one of the very top wine makers. All of his wines are impeccably vinified, beautifully hued and consistently reliable. He has been making this distinctive wine for about 40 years and to paraphrase his own words “it can be very good when young, superb with a little maturity and still going strong at 30 plus”. This classic blend of 62% merlot and 38% cabernet sauvignon provides deliciously sensual drinking.

Still presided over by the magnificent Madame Gasqueton who is one of the truly legendary “châtelaines” of the Médoc. A hidden treasure, this classic estate nestles behind ancient stone walls that conceal an aladdin’s cave of wine gems. The commune of St. Estephe produces the most feminine of all the clarets and the ’96 vintage was truly exceptional. A complex, spicy nose mingled with cassis and cherry aromas followed by the purest of fruit on the palate and powerful yet smooth tannins on the finish. Parker 92 points. Decanting recommended.

Stéphane is a young producer who is rapidly gaining star status. His wines offer a typical representation of the region and syrah is his true love. This stunner is fresh, pure, perfumed, packed with ripe fruit and wonderfully refined. He may be the new kid on the block but he really deserves some attention!

Creation of the great triumvirate of the Northern Rhone: Villard, Gaillard and Cuillard, this 100% Syrah cuvée, is made from 5-year old vines. It exhibits an opaque purple colour as well as sumptuously sweet blackberry fruit intermingled with cassis and minerals. Not to be trifled with!

Château du Cèdre is regarded by many as the leading estate in Cahors. The principal grape varieties of the appellation are Malbec (known locally as Cot) and Tannat. Wines don’t come much bigger than this!

Having recently won “Best Syrah in the World”, this property is really going places. Owned by the illustrious leather goods family Descours, based in Paris, this delightful property is tucked away in Southern Provence and was originally purchased as a hobby! We are thrilled to have discovered this hidden gem, tucked away in a tiny village in the beautiful Côtes du Luberon.
Originally a glass-works (verre = glass) it seems quite appropriate that La Verrerie is now producing the contents rather than the bottle! The property has gone from strength in recent years and current “Directeur Générale” Olivier Adnot is also the winemaker so the whole project revolves around his vision, talent and dedication to the vineyard. Ladies, he is a charming, handsome Frenchman who makes sublime wine … what more could you ask for! Seriously though, Olivier and his team are always delighted to welcome our guests for a tasting and tour of the winery, just let us know if you’d like to visit.
The grapes come first, naturally, the gently sloping vineyards have been completely renovated and, in some cases, re-planted. The winery itself is pristine and works like clockwork thanks to a devoted team who all feel like part of the Verrerie family. The main focus is on the syrah grape, which is cultivated virtually organically alongside other Rhône varieties such as grenache and mourvèdre.
In addition, the original olive groves have been extended and given a new lease of life. The olive oil produced here is simply out of this world and our chef would not be without it!

An equal blending of roussanne,grenache blanc, clairette and bourboulenc. Hand-picked and aged for six months on the lees in stainless steel. Attractive, floral aromas and a rich, honeyed palate.

This is not a flimsy, feminine rosé, it is a persistent pink with attitude. Typically Provencale in style, with plenty of backbone and aromatic hints of summer fruits. A combination of finesse, strength and lovely freshness, this is a wine for eating not drinking.

Named after the stunning Tuscan style villa that presides over the vineyards, complete with an avenue of Statuesque Lombardy poplars! A delightfully soft blend of syrah, grenache and carignan aged for 15-18 months in oak barrels. Silky and elegant with a lingering aftertaste of wild fruits and chocolate.

A 50/50 blend of syrah and grenache, this is another Rhône style wine yet smoother and more elegant. Up to 24 months in oak with spicy, herbaceous characters and generous, ripe fruit. An absolute winner with lamb dishes and a wine that, once enjoyed, you will keep coming back to.

Bin No 83: Merlot, Terre del Noce 2005
Vinified from grapes of its own production from the most highly rated areas in Trentino. This is a typical lighter style of merlot with lovely soft fruit and a very approachable style. A perfect wine for sipping on its own and a good choice if you prefer red with fish.

This Chianti is a little (actually not so little) belter! A lovely, meaty style of wine with flavours of spicy ripe cherries and herbs to really wake up your tastebuds, with even a whiff of saddle leather on the racy, generous nose.

Classic by name and classic by nature, tradition is the watchword here. A restrained nose of spicy dried fruits leads to a big, savoury “attack” on the palate followed by a long, satisfying finish. Wine from this vineyard was served to Garibaldi at the official banquet celebrating the unification of Italy in 1861 and, more recently, appeared in one of the Godfather movies! Be patient and let the wine open up a little in the glass before enjoying this big, dark beauty.

Bin No 86: Marqués de Murrieta Rioja Reserva 2004
A powerful, brooding youngster that demonstrates maturity beyond its tender years. The nose of black currants and berries leads to a surprisingly creamy, soft palate that invites you to dine with it. Not a classic Rioja but at 85% tempranillo and with almost two years in oak it has plenty to say for itself.

The bodega is situated in Cuzcurrita de Rio Tiron, on the north-western edge of Rioja. A family owned estate consisting of some 75ha of vineyards. Four generations of the family have dedicated themselves to the cultivation of their vineyards and production of wine. This wine comes from the best Tempranillo grapes of the estate, all of them from vineyards over 20 years old. A true, mature example of Rioja.

Gold medal in Decanter world Wine Awards and double gold in Veritas Wine Awards. This wine is generally considered to be more classic than New World in style and comes from one of the most prestigious estates in South Africa. Made from a blend of Cabernet/Shiraz and Merlot. Nelson Mandela selected this wine to be served at the Nobel Peace Prize Dinner in Oslo.

This luscious “pinot” comes from the carefully selected Victorian vineyard range that aims to epitomise the very best the region has to offer. If you like big, bold wines you will be hooked on this beauty from The Lodge Hill vineyard from the very first sniff. Deep, dark, inky red with a huge nose of ripe, juicy plums and luscious berry flavours followed by a hint of chocolate leading onto a sensational finishing with silky smooth tannins and a burst of peppery spice. A really elegant sensory overload, justly awarded 91 points by Wine Spectator.

In the cool climate Margaret River region, this winery is a lot more hands-off than many, as their wine-maker says “we let the quality fruit do the talking." How right she is! Here we have a really elegant medium-bodied wine that opens with cherry, blackcurrant and spicy oak characters that draw you into a beautifully balanced mid-palate of ripe cabernet fruit flavours, soft generous tannins and excellent length. Irrelevant fact: they also breed champion Airedale terriers!
